This week began with a group discussion on the pros and cons of various building materials for the structural make-up of the building. The consensus was to build a steel framed building because we would be able to span longer lengths without being obstructed by columns in the building. Structural Team: The structural group learned about […]
Construction Activity The students arrived eager to finish their structural models to see if their team’s creation could withstand the load test. Their objective was to build a structure that could carry 350 grams, the approximate weight of a filled 12 oz. can of pop. Once the construction period was over, each group presented their structure
IPD Presentation At week 6 of ACE, after a nice potato bar dinner at HDR’s brand new office, we reviewed construction contracts – we covered the traditional process, design-bid-build which is the most common contract, the design build where everything is done in-house, and the collaborative approach of Integrated Project Delivery (IPD), and how the
After a delicious dinner at HDR’s new office, the students were taught how to scale drawings using an engineer’s scale. The team broke up into smaller groups and worked on designing the marketplace on paper. Each team had to use their newly learned scaling abilities to allocate the appropriate square footages for the rooms that
In our eleventh week of ACE 2014/15 (wow! only seven more meetings left!) Team 2 met at Primera’s office to learn the particulars of MEP and related architectural engineering. After a nice tour of the office students were presented with the ceiling-in-a-box challenge. Using copper wire, a variety of colored pipe cleaners, a white foam
For a little fun, the students of Team 2 split up into three teams and were tasked with designing a structure/capsule which might contain a 4″ x 4″ x 4″ cube, span a minimum of 6″ between two books, support the weight of a single can of pop, and have at least two window. There were

This week Team 2 worked on developing the final project concepts. Through hand drawing and the 3D modeling in SketchUp, the students were able to mass out the selected concepts and program. It was a great chance for students to dive into the ideas they discussed in Week 7 and vet out how the overall concepts
Upon return from the holiday break, Team 2 students were excited and eager to get back to work! We did a quick recap of our meeting with the client in Week 6 then parred down the programmatic concept list to the following: – Performance space – Job Opportunities – Mural – Garden – Synergy
Team 2 is moving right along! Before the Winter Break we met with our client, representatives from Focal Point as well as the lead designers and project managers from their team. The students finalized their preliminary ideas for the site and presented these concepts. What followed was a great discussion and feedback session which have
Last week the ACE Team 2 students had great fun looking for inspiration to cut out of a variety of design magazines! These served as the springboard for a deeper conversation about what kind of elements would fit well on our site at 31st Street and Kedzie. In turn, we discussed the use of scale and discovered how
