Architecture, Inspirational Hat Design…

“The act of building can be brutal. When I build on a site in nature that is totally unspoiled, it is a fight, an attack by our culture. In this confrontation, I strive to make a building that will make people more aware of the beauty of the setting, and when looking at a building, a hope for a new consciousness to see the beauty there as well.”

What: Architecture Presentation + Activities

Where: VOA, 224 South Michigan Avenue, Floor 14

When: Thursday, November 19, 5:00 – 7:00 pm

Why:  On this day, students learned what it means to be an architect. What is an architect and how do you become one? You can find the presentation attached just in case you could not attend (or if you want to be awesome and look at it again)! 🙂  The presentation sparked many great questions including a discussion on the role of consultants in the design process. Remember: Architects must have an understanding of everything that goes into a building but we cannot be experts in everything! Consultants are experts in a certain field and they are brought on to a project in order to consult about specific topics including structural, mechanical, electrical, or even acoustical.

After learning about architects, we played the Name Game as an icebreaker and had lots of laughs as we attempted to come up with adjectives that started with the first letter of our name. I must say, everyone did an amazing job remembering the names as we went around the room.

Last but not least, we searched for inspirational architecture in magazines to then create a hat from this inspiration. Basically, we designed hats to look like buildings! To end the night, we had a fashion show! The hats were judged according to best hat (looked like the building inspired by) and tallest hat.
