Architecture 101

We do not create the work. I believe we, in fact, are discoverers. – Glenn Murcutt

What: Architecture 101 – What is an Architect & How do you become one
Where: Stantec, 224 South Michigan Avenue, Suite 1400
When: Thursday, November 17, 5:00 – 7:00 pm
Why:
First, we had two presentations on Architecture that explained what an architect does daily and the process of becoming an architect – the “jack of all trades but a master of none”.
We learned about the different phases of design: Conceptual Design, Schematic Design, Design Development, Construction Documents, Bidding & Negotiating, & Construction Administration.
We learned about the steps to becoming an architect: Education, Study Abroad, Internship, Seven Exams, Licensure.
Then, we played the name game… for some reason I can never come up with a suitable adjective that starts with the first letter of my name! sigh… But everyone else seemed to have a blast!

Finally, we designed a few hats with buildings as the inspiration. And we only had 30 minutes left for the charrette and fashion show! But we pulled it off!

Blog Quiz:
Draw your house in plan (by hand or in a program if you know one). This should include labeling the different spaces. Draw the walls, perhaps even some of the furniture and appliances. The spaces should be recognizable. Also, think about craft…line weights of what is cut through in plan should be heavier. If you don’t know what this should look like, research plans online and find something to use as an example. Scan or photograph (nice quality) and email to me!
*Note: Answer this question by next Thursday to possibly receive a prize. Answer by emailing your response to lindsay.boley@stantec.com. We would love to hear your thoughts! It can be brief, and do not be afraid to speak up!!
