Chicago Scholars | Application and Deadline

In ACE Team 1, ACE Team 2, ACE Team 3 on 01.07.2013 at .

Hi Teams 1, 2, and 3:

Happy Holidays!! Hope things are going great for you and for your teams. Before you break we wanted to send you information on the Chicago Scholars program application process and ask that you give it to the relevant students on your team. Briefly, Chicago Scholars is an organization that we are partnering with that provides students with considerable assistance in getting into college and supports them in various ways throughout their college career. This is something we have always wanted to provide but never had the resources to do so and we are excited about having this opportunity.
There are two attachments – a one page notice you can give to the juniors on your team who meet the criteria to apply, and a second document that gives additional information about Chicago Scholars and their application process. Please give this information to every junior on your team who :
• Lives within the Chicago city limits
• Attends a Chicago high school (public, charter, private or parochial)
• Has a minimum 3.0 G.P.A. and a 19 PLAN/ACT score or higher
• Is potentially the first in their families to attend college, has high economic need, and/or comes from otherwise underserved communities

If you don’t know if a student meets these qualifications please err on the side of including them. The DEADLINE TO APPLY IS JANUARY 31, 2012. We ask that you follow up with the students after break to see if they have applied and offer any help you can in getting them to finish the application process.
Last year, we found out about the program too late for our students to apply. We did get some of our students into the program through a separate process but we had to pay a fee for that which then made us unable to give those students one of our own scholarships. So that is why we would like as many of our students to apply on their own so we can give them additional scholarships from our own funds.

If you have any questions don’t hesitate to contact me. Thanks for ALL that you do for our students!
Pat

Given a certain budget and a list of materials at a cost, students built and designed a structure that would fit a 6″ x 11″ x 4″ dimension to support a pop can on top.  It turned out to be quite a challenge. With limited time and money, students had to turn drawings on paper into built form. I think everyone had a blast with this exercise and learned a lot of the real world challenges of the construction fields.

At our meeting last week Team One went VERTICAL!!  Our students and mentors got a first-hand look at Roosevelt University’s New Vertical Campus building.  The building was designed by Team One mentor group VOA Associates.

VOA worked with Roosevelt University to develop this distinctive 35-story tower to house academic, student life and administrative spaces on several lower floors surmounted by over 600 student residences with expansive views of the Chicago Loop and Lake Michigan.  The building is linked with existing facilities in the historic Auditorium Theater Building.  This shimmering column of blue glass redefines the character of this institution for future generations of Roosevelt students and faculty.

For more info on the Vertical Campus check out these links:

Students great job on the first week of the ACE Program!

Inspired by the Halloween season and the architectural tradition of the Beaux Arts Ball students where given the task of designing and constructing architecturally-inspired, creatively constructed, elegantly engineered hat for a mentor.  The catch, students were limited to using only spaghetti and tape to construct their masterpieces!

Team One in 2011 CIRT/ACE National Design Competition

In ACE Team 1, General Information on 04.12.2011 at .

Students of ACE Mentor Program Team One have been awarded an Honorable Mention/Second Runner-Up in the 2011 CIRT/ACE National Design Competition.  The team’s design project focused on the adaptive reuse of the Singer Pavilion, on the former Michael Reese Hospital Campus, into a school for the performing arts.

This is a great achievement for the ACE Chicago Chapter as it marks the first time a member of the Chicago affiliate has placed in the national competition.  Most importantly it is a tremendous recognition of the accomplishments of the students this year.  The prize comes with a cash award that will help support the programs and scholarships offered by the ACE Mentor Chicago Chapter.

The Team One students, all from Chicago area high schools, were led by volunteers from DeStefano Partners, The George Sollitt Construction Company, Thornton Tomasetti, and The Rise Group.
